How the Flame Sensor Works

There is a very confusing topic in this article which is “How flame sensor works” and every fact related to how flame sensor works has been discussed so briefly that we can easily understand about the working of flame sensor. can.

The flame sensor works as a detection device for a device that is sensitive enough that it can detect in a normal source of light. Flame sensor which operates mainly in the range between 750 – 1200 nm. It can work for a source of light. For this reason the flame sensor acted as the module of the sensor.

How the flame sensor works

Flame Sensor:

From the word we can easily take the meaning of this flame sensor which is a sensor which can detect in fire or flame. It can detect light from very short range wavelength to very high range wavelength.

How the flame sensor works

The output for the flame sensor can be digital or analog . As one of the alarms working in the field of flame sensor industry and engineering. But high temperature can affect it very badly. For this reason the flame sensor is located at some distance from the fire or flame.

The flame sensor is so sensitive that it can detect flame or fire from a distance of 100 to 700 cm.

How does Radiant Flame Sensor work?

Radiant sensor is a thermostat or bimetallic switch. The flame’s radiant sensor is designed in such a way that it can easily detect heat emissions from igniters or flame burners.

The process of the radiant sensor of the flame is briefly described in the section below,

  1. At the beginning of the process we need to open the bottom of the dryer to access the panel or we need to open the burner door. The dryer must then be started by a switch to continue the process cycle for the system’s heat demand.
  2. In the next step the igniters of the radiant flame sensor which are connected to the secondary coil and remain in series that it will not draw enough current. The igniter is cooler than the booster coil and the current is pushed away from the hot part of the booster coil. As a net result the valve of the primary may not open and is not lit by the igniter resulting in no flame. This is the perfect time to check the sensor of the radiant flame.
  3. The dryer is switched off and the dryer’s power card has been disconnected. The front of the dryer needs to be removed if the burner is not fully assembled.
  4. The two wires connected to the burner funnel of the sensor of the radiant are disconnected.
  5. The ohmmeter probe is placed between the two terminals of the sensor of the flame radiant. If there is no movement in the meter at this time, it means that the sensor is not working properly. In order to check the ohmmeter is working without touching the probe, the bad sensor needs to be removed from the system. If the radiant sensor’s meter can read 0 ohms then the current sensor is good.

Flame Sensor Type:

The sensor of flame is made with the help of electromagnetic circuit. In this sensor of flame, a receiver is attached to the system, which is a type of electromagnetic radiation.

Flame sensors can be mainly classified into four categories. types are,

  • IR Multi Spectrum
  • IR Single Frequency
  • UV/IR Flame Detector
  • UV Flame Detector

IR Multi Spectrum :

The IR Multi Spectrum Detector can operate in the region of the IR spectrum up to three specific wavelength bands. Common mathematical techniques are the use of IR multi-spectrum for the classification of false alarms and fires.

IR Single Frequency:

Infrared spectral only band works for IR multi spectrum detector. The mass of gases that must be present in the hot state emits a characteristic spectral pattern in the infrared spectral region. The gases in the hot surface of the sphere are subject to each other’s interface.

UV/IR Flame Detector:

One of the most common flame detectors is the UV/IR flame detector. This type of detector employs three signals in two regions of the spectral. This UV/IR flame detector can reliably identify fires and reduce false alarms. The working purpose of UV/IR detector is almost same as that of IR multi spectrum.

UV Flame Detector:

This type of flame detector can work even in very short wavelength light sources. It can work with less than 300 nm wavelength. It can detect at very high speeds because the ignition of a fire or explosion emits ultraviolet radiation. The accuracy of UV flame detector is quite good.

Flame Sensor Application:

The main purpose of the flame sensor is to reduce the risks arising in the process of ignition. The sensor of flame mainly works in industrial field for safety purpose.

The applications of flame sensor are listed below,

  1. fire alarm
  2. fire detection
  3. Radiation Research Laboratory
  4. fire fighting robot
  5. gas powered equipment for cooking
  6. industrial gas turbine
  7. drying system
  8. industrial heating
  9. hydrogen station
  10. ignition system
  11. Mine

How does a flame sensor for a boiler work?

Boiler flame sensor works as a detector of furnace where flame or fire is present. A metal rod which is very thin and of short length is attached to the furnace. The metal rods produce electricity to confirm that the furnace should have a place to burn. When the gas valve is open, the combustion process starts.

In this stage a current is sent through the sensor to detect the presence of heat in the boiler furnace. Now the flame detection continues to heat up, but the sensor could not function properly for 10 seconds from the start. The cycle must continue twice before turning the control board on and off.

How does the sensor’s water heater flame work?

The flame sensor thermocouple in a water heater is used to control the flow of gas. When pilot light is used it is called thermocouple and when unit of electronic ignition is used it is called flame sensor.

In water heater flame sensor heat is converted into electric current and works as control valve from where gas can be flown without facing any problem in gas supply valve. In other words we can also explain to the sensor that it can stop the flow of gas from the gas valve to the burner furnace.

The thermocouple used in a flame sensor is basically a part of the pilot burner which is connected to the gas control valve which is placed on the exterior of the heater.

How does a gas flame sensor work?

A gas flame sensor is used in a wide range of chemical resistors. A gas sensor can easily detect the presence of a gas in a surface area thanks to the conduction of current on the chemistry. There are n types of semiconductors used such as tin dioxide which must be electron free.

There is more oxygen in the atmosphere than flammable gases. Molecules of oxygen gases attract free electrons that are already present in tin dioxide and help bring in surface area. We can get zero output only when tin oxide is free from electrons.

How does mercury flame sensor work?

The way mercury flame sensor works depends on the amount of mercury vaporizing. Parts included capillary tube, sensor end, SPDT switch. Parts are full of mercury.

The pilot flame at the end of the capillary tube of the flame sensor generates heat, at which time the gas vaporizes. The non-vaporized material of mercury is sent to the gas valve by a bellow type switch or a diaphragm tube.

The spring tension at the time the bellows switch moves against a non-adjustable one is calculated using the force to snap the SPDT diaphragm from one set of contacts to another set of contacts. In the MPS device switch assembly, the contacts that are closed that are open and the contacts that are normally open are closed.

How does a UV flame sensor work?

A UV flame sensor is a very sensitive detector. The UV flame sensor has a range of about 4.4 – 4.5 µm and is emitted by hydrocarbon fuels and flame.

A UV sensor consists of infrared and ultraviolet sensors and both the sensors are connected with the help of a single device. The sensor’s functional purpose is to detect ultraviolet radiations which are flame emitted and also from a wide range of sensitive flammable fuels such as ammonia, hydrazine, sulphur, hydrocarbons .

How does the flame sensor on a gas dryer work?

Burner funnel is present in the flame sensor which is used as a detector of the temperature of the igniter. When the igniter temperature is too high, the sensors detect the system’s igniter and turn it off.

How does a flame sensor work on a gas furnace?

The flame sensor of a gas furnace works by detecting the flame or fire present in the system. The sensor of a gas furnace is not very tall and is made of thin metal rods and produces little electricity to confirm that a flame is present in the system.

How does a single wire flame sensor work?

The flame sensor of the furnace works by detecting the flame or fire present in the system. The system’s sensor is connected to a single wire and can provide a view of fire or flame.
