Main point
- Describing it as a pro-people step, PMGKAY (Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana) has been extended till September 2022 as a part of Phase 5 of this scheme.
- This scheme was launched in 2020 after the Kovid-19 pandemic.
- Under this scheme 5 kg food grains are given free of cost per person per month.
- This includes all the beneficiaries, who are covered under Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and National Food Security Act (NFSA) (Antyodaya Anna Yojana and Priority Families).

The first phase of the scheme is operational from April, 2020 to June 2020, phase 2 from July to November 2020, phase 3 from May to June 2021, while phase 4 is operational from July-November 2021.
Plan Phase 5
The phase 5 of PMGKAY scheme will start from December 2021 and will end in March 2022. There will be an estimated additional food subsidy of Rs 53,344.52 crore in this phase.
PMGKAY
PMGKAY was launched by the government in March 2020 amid the outbreak of Covid-19. Under this scheme, the government started distribution of additional free food grains (rice/wheat) on a scale of 5 kg per person per month to around 80 crore beneficiaries of NFSA. So far, the department has allocated about 600 LMT of food grains to the States/UTs, which is equivalent to about Rs 2.07 lakh crore in food subsidy.
